The auction features property from the estates and collections of several prominent Savannah and Charleston families. The large majority of the property in the auction comes from the Estate of Richard Thomas who spent most of his adult life in Savannah. He was a lifelong collector whose house was filled with the objects he loved. A master florist with multiple stores, he was well known in the Savannah community. His interests were many and varied from breeding champion bulldogs to collecting religious artifacts and animalia. Of note are his collection of Russian icons.
Also up for auction is the Savannah art collection of Jeffery Williams and the Late Rose Williams. Mr. Williams states that To Rose and me it was as much about the artists as it was about the art. We met most of the artists who created the paintings in our collection, and many became friends. We enjoyed seeing many of them on a regular basis. It was important to us to support the emerging artist. Our involvement in the art community was the motivation for starting the newspaper, Coastal Antiques and Art_. Highlights include works by Betsy Cain, Ray Ellis, Jack Leigh, Larry Levow, Jerome Temple and a large photographic collection with many works by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, who is best known for his iconic image of Che Guevara.
For the bird enthusiast there is a wonderful collection of early ornithological prints from the estate of Judge Herman W. Coolidge, Sr. of Savannah. Included are works by Mark Catesby, Alexander Wilson and John Abbott. Other highlights from the estate include an early hand drawn map on silk of Isle of Hope, GA dated 1824 and a wonderful Myrtle Jones painting of Savannah_s River Street.
Enjoy the auction!
