Nye and Company will be posting an auction to HYPERLINK "http://www.igavelauctions.com" www.igavelauctions.com Tuesday, April 15th lasting two weeks, until April 29th. The sale is typical of a Nye offering in that it has a wide spectrum of material from all over the tri-state area. An opportunity to see the pieces in person occurs while the galleries are open to the public, April 21st to the 29th, including the weekend. Hours of operation are available on the web, HYPERLINK "http://www.nyeandcompany.com" www.nyeandcompany.com. Extended viewing hours will take place late Monday, the 28th from 5-7pm. A lovely image of a seated young girl cradling a cat in her lap is one of the Folk portraits in the sale. Another beguiling portrait depicting a boy and his dog is accented by the fact he_s holding his treasured bow-and-arrow. There are also nave images of men and women. The brightly colored cubist streetscape by Hans Weingaertner has an inner glow that belies the subject matter. Another featured painting is a nocturnal scene by American artist, Ben Foster (1852-1926). Albert Rigolot, French (1862-1932) has a monumental landscape in the auction. An academic society portrait by the renowned James Carroll Beckwith. Table accessories include numerous figural porcelain works by Meissen. Old Daum and old Lalique desk garnitures are being offered as well as Art Nouveau glass table lamps. Private collections come from Greenwich, Connecticut and the greater Philadelphia area. Each includes lots of English and American antiques and nice carpets. A near pair of giltwood convex mirrors with eagle finials, which have nice small proportions, would look great above a large room-size Heriz carpet. A George III mahogany linen press, a Victorian specimen cabinet and numerous maps in polychrome hold the group together. The Cartier watch is the highlight of the silver and jewelry categories, though other collectible names are represented in the sale like Tiffany, Kirk, Gorham, Ripka, Reed and Barton and more. The sale includes a rare opportunity to support one of Newark_s cultural jewels: Aljira, a center for contemporary art. Located downtown at 591 Broad Street, they are in the heart of the Arts Triangle and will provide a gathering Monday, April 28th from 5-7pm. It will be an opportunity to visit with and meet their founding director, Victor Davson. On the occasion of Aljira_s 30th anniversary, they_re offering over fifty works of art at auction to further enhance and promote this institution, which is dedicated to the advancement of artists and their careers. The name means dreamtime, in the Australian Aboriginal language and relates to the concepts of timelessness and possibility, characteristics of the artistic process. Auction proceeds will enable Aljira to continue to seek-out emerging or under-represented artists and promote cross-cultural conversation and a better understanding of the interesting times in which we are living. Some works included in the auction are by Sam Gilliam, Julien Kremier, Loretta Lux, Mickalene Thomas and many more. Various media are present and available, as well, with lithographs, original paintings, photographs and collages and watercolors. In order to benefit Aljira and help them celebrate their anniversary, opening bids for some works are extremely reasonable and may be as low as $400. Other pieces are more expensive, but the diversity and overall quality of the collection make this a rare opportunity to support this important institution. In early 2010, Nye and Company relocated to Bloomfield, New Jersey making them more easily accessible to New York City. Our location moments off major interstate arties (Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Routes 80, 280, 287) and State Routes 3, 46 and 23, is easily found by the large-format banners on the fa_ade.
