Our February auction features an Important Salem Federal Gentleman’s Secretary originally from the collection of Henry D. Green, that shares the same form as well as bellflower and ebony dot inlays on the pilasters as a labeled Edmund Johnson secretary at Winterthur. There is also an interesting group of American Folk Art including works by Clementine Hunter, Ulysses Davis, Richard Burnside, Sam Doyle, Jimmie Lee Sudduth and others.

Fine art highlights include mid-century paintings by Savannah/New Jersey artist David Delong and Israeli artist Lea Nikel as well as a Picasso aquatint and drypoint of the Artist in his Studio and a wonderful 19 th century portrait of a boy reading a newspaper by Charles Moreau.

The auction includes French, English and American 18th and 19th century furniture and decorations, Asian Art including a group of beautifully embroidered silk jackets and skirts from the 1930s and contemporary photographs of mainly Western landscape scenes.

Mr. Chaplain_s Sarasota home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was previously the home of Chick_ Austin, the iconic director of Hartford_s Wadsworth Athenaeum from 1927 through 1944 and the first director of Sarasota_s Ringling Museum of Art. The Chaplain collection of over 500 paintingsonly 140 of which are being offered herewas focused on traditional 19th and early 20th Century fine art as well as Old Masters, many in spectacular gilt frames, including examples from Newcomb-Macklin. This auction features Asian and Ethnographic art from the Collection of Ron Krannich that he amassed over the last 35 years.  As a travel writer he spanned the globe, and as a collector he purchased items he was passionate about along the way.  

Other highlights in the auction include American, English and French 18th and 19th century furniture and decorations, the steel sculpture featured above by Ernest Trova, a bronze of Cupid and Psyche by Eugene-Ernest Chretien, a 16th century portrait of Virgin and Child from the Circle of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, several works by Savannah artists Myrtle Jones, Christopher Murphy Jr. and Sr., Hattie Saussy and others.

Our summer auction features some wonderful garden items including a fountain by famed Savannah blacksmith Ivan Bailey, a large garden aviary, cast iron garden furniture and a Neoclassical style dog house.  

Highlights of the auction include works by Savannah artists Larry Connatser, Hattie Saussy, Ann Osteen and Betsy Cain as well as three works by well-known Charleston artist John Carroll Doyle. 

Other highlights include a sweeping painting of the Swiss Alps by Francois Diday dated 1869, three lucite sculptures by Frederick Elliott Hart, English, American, Italian and French Furniture and Decorative Arts, Jewelry, Maps, Rugs, Books, Ethnographic Art, Asian Art, Fine Silver, Sporting Art and Kennedy memorabilia.
