This eclectic sale features diverse property from a variety of collections and estates with 'fresh-to-the- market' property ranging from a huge collection of African, South Pacific & Asian Art put together over the past half century from an enthusiastic husband and wife team of collectors to property that has come directly from the studios of several artist's estates. Although diverse in nature, the collections are unified in their interesting mixtures. By juxtaposing Modernism with non-Western Art, one can see influences on many of the 20th Century's different styles. A most obvious example would be the several Picasso ceramics being sold next to African Tribal artifacts, but one can also see some of the ferocity in the African masks repeated in the sculptural faces of Giuseeppe Napoli, a lesser known figure of the mid-20th century New York School art scene. One can also see influences of tribal art in Audrey Skalings painted wood sculptures. A Nancy Spero work, harkens back to images of "The Goddess" as depicted in South East Asian mythology, while the Geometric simplicity of minimalist art, like Ellsworth Kelly, was prefigured in items like Kuba cloth panels. One of the most important paintings in the sale, a Marino Marini gouache of figures on horseback also reflects some of the simplicity of primitive art in its simplified but energetic figures. Other modern pictures of note include works by Marcos Grigorian, Olga De Amaral, Georges Braque and a number of works by Calder. 20th Century Furniture & Design includes a good pair of Robsjohn-Gibbings Chairs and a Jean Royere lamp. In the Asian section of the sale, there are some very good hardstone carvings, snuff bottles and beautiful porcelains as well as paintings and bronzes. We hope you enjoy this large and fascinating auction.
