Online Auction Dates: October 17 - November 9, 2012 To preview the photographs in person please contact Daniel Cooney Fine Art at 212 255 8158 or dan@danielcooneyfineart.com. Daniel Cooney Fine Art and iGavelAuctions.com are very pleased to announce our second Online Auction of Photographs from the Archive of Dody Weston Thompson and Other Collections. The impressive archive of Dody Weston Thompson consists of images by Manual Alvarez Bravo, Imogen Cunningham,Clarence John Laughlin, Donald Ross, Brett Weston, Edward Weston,

and Dody Weston Thompson herself. Dody Weston Thompson was Edward Weston_s assistant and prot_g_ during the heyday of the West Coast Movement in photography. As Edward_s full-time apprentice, Dody moved onto the grounds of Wildcat Hill in 1948 and became an integral part of Edward_s photographic practice. Herself a skilled photographer and artful writer, she was invited to join the f/64 group in 1949 and wrote the preface to Edward_s My Camera on Point Lobos. Dody was also a founder and frequent contributor to the photographic journal Aperture. In 1952 Dody married Brett Weston, Edward_s son. Dody and Brett traveled the United States together and photographed some of their most recognizable images, most notably in White Sands, NM. During this time Dody also befriended and collaborated with many of Edward_s famous friends including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand and Minor White among others. The collection we are offering has a clear provenance from Dody Weston Thompson's archive. The bulk of the auction consists of images by Edward Weston made from copy negatives that Ms. Thompson made of her personal photography collection. For Ms. Thompson the prints were a way to catalogue her own collection and to assist in her teaching. The prints maintain the integrity of the original images and are printed beautifully. Additionally we have three original prints by Brett Weston from his famed White Sands Portfolio, 1949. From Dody herself we have some beautiful groupings of her work that feature her own photographic style and some wonderful portraits of other artists. Furthermore, the auction features three portraits of Dody by acclaimed New Orleans photographer Clarence John Laughlin. During Dody_s childhood in New Orleans she assisted and modeled for Laughlin who was a contemporary of Dody_s mother. All photographs in the auction are available for inspection at Daniel Cooney Fine Art. DC03
