He grew up on Combahee Plantation, went to Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts and graduated from Yale University. He was a world traveler and a master craftsman in a number of disciplines. He was an avid book collector and purchased many of the lots offered here in England. One of the highlights from his collection is R. Bowdler Sharpe_s Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower-Birds, 1891-1898, a two volume, folio size set with superb prints by and after J. Gould, J.G. Keulemnans and W. Hart. Book categories include children_s classics, Asian history, architectural and decorative arts reference books, British classics with fine leather bindings, elephant folios with architectural and decorative prints and a large collection of Arthur Rakham illustrated books. Other highlights from the auction include a Victorian burl-walnut gilt-metal mounted pedestal desk stamped by James Winter & Son, circa 1840 and a wonderful painting by Thomas Smythe (British, 1825-1906) of Horse Traders. This auction features Asian and Ethnographic art from the Collection of Ron Krannich that he amassed over the last 35 years. As a travel writer he spanned the globe, and as a collector he purchased items he was passionate about along the way.
Other highlights in the auction include American, English and French 18th and 19th century furniture and decorations, the steel sculpture featured above by Ernest Trova, a bronze of Cupid and Psyche by Eugene-Ernest Chretien, a 16th century portrait of Virgin and Child from the Circle of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, several works by Savannah artists Myrtle Jones, Christopher Murphy Jr. and Sr., Hattie Saussy and others.
